For García Márquez, this novel represented a bonding of his narrative and journalistic styles, with an approximation to the typical police novel. the story is based on real events which took place in 1951, and he took the crime, the characters, the scenery and events and altered them in his narrative, all this without neglecting the meticulous approach needed for any journalistic chronicle.
